As you may have heard, a little over a month ago, Gawker Media, the parent company of several popular web sites such as Gizmodo and Jezebel, had its user database hacked. It was discovered that 1.3 million user names/passwords (including more than 500,000 user emails) were taken and made publicly available on sites such as the Pirate Bay (luckily, not all of the information was decrypted). While these were only credentials for accounts used to leave comments on Gawker Media’s sites, this inimical event drew attention to an increasingly relevant threat to the average online citizen.
