In regard to communications tools, Google offers a boatload of options. You can chat, instant message, make traditional voice/video calls, and even attend video conferences with Hangouts. Yet, these tools are, to an extent, tied to an individual web page (i.e., Gmail) and don’t operate independently of the browser tab.
If you refresh the page or accidentally close the tab, all associated tools and conversations will end, abruptly. OS X only: I’ve been a fan of iTunes ever since I got my first Mac. For the first time, I had found an application that handled the purchase, organization, and playback of a variety of different content with aplomb. Yet, I have found myself being attracted to the abundance of new, online music streaming services.
Usually free (or freemium), these services provide different ways for you to discover new music and access your tunes no matter where you are. The downside is that I now have multiple applications on my computer for listening to music, and they often conflict with each other for control of the playback function keys on my keyboard. In addition, it’s a hassle to have to switch back and forth between each app.

OS X only: Pandora is an excellent, online music service that enables you to create custom radio stations and stream your favorite tunes through a web browser or through the apps they provide for popular mobile operating systems, such as iOS and Android.
Although the basic service is free, you can enjoy higher quality streams without intrusive ads for a nominal fee ($36 per year), referred to as Pandora One. In addition, you get access to their desktop client, which enables you to control Pandora through a native application for your operating system.
If you enjoy using the service and have the requisite funds, I highly recommend upgrading, but if your financial situation is tight and you want to enjoy the benefits of a native desktop Pandora experience, give Pianopub a try. Read more
