Back To Basics: Web Browser Settings

This is the first entry in a multi-part series. Part 2

Often, I serve as free tech support for my family. While I’m troubleshooting their issues, I cannot help but notice that although they have been using computers for most of their lives, they are only experiencing a subset of what their PCs can do because they’re using techniques that greatly impede the speed and efficiency of their computing experience.

One reason that many people who are considered technologically literate appear to be so fluent is because they have mastered simple aspects of interacting with their PCs. Once this initial source of friction is removed, you can begin to unleash your computing potential.

So, today I am publishing the first entry in a new series entitled Back To Basics, which focuses on fundamental aspects of computing that, once committed to memory, will greatly increase your ability to utilize your tech. Read more

One Password Manager To Rule Them All: LastPass, Part 1

This is the first entry in a multi-part series on LastPass. Part 2 Part 3

As you may have heard, a little over a month ago, Gawker Media, the parent company of several popular web sites such as Gizmodo and Jezebel, had its user database hacked. It was discovered that 1.3 million user names/passwords (including more than 500,000 user emails) were taken and made publicly available on sites such as the Pirate Bay (luckily, not all of the information was decrypted). While these were only credentials for accounts used to leave comments on Gawker Media’s sites, this inimical event drew attention to an increasingly relevant threat to the average online citizen. It’s time to talk about password security, which means it’s time to discuss LastPass. Read more

Leave My Internet Alone: Network Neutrality

As nightfall does not come all at once, neither does oppression. In both instances, there is a twilight when everything remains seemingly unchanged. And it is in such a twilight that we all must be aware of change in the air, however slight, lest we become unwilling victims of the darkness. – William Douglas

Without net neutrality, the Internet would start to look like cable TV. A handful of massive companies would control access and distribution of content, deciding what you get to see and how much it costs. Major industries such as health care, finance, retailing and gambling would face huge tariffs for fast, secure Internet use … Most of the great innovators in the history of the Internet started out in their garages with great ideas and little capital. This is no accident. Network neutrality protections minimized control by the network owners, maximized competition and invited outsiders in to innovate. Net neutrality guaranteed a free and competitive market for Internet content.

Lawrence Lessig & Robert W. McChesney

If you pay attention to the news, you might have heard the term. What does it mean? Why is it important? How will you be affected and what, if anything, should you do? Today, I put forth a primer on Network Neutrality, a critical concept whose implementation (or lack thereof) will affect the future of the Internet itself. Read more
